Planes Around Laenwold

Laenwold is a material plane (and for the purposes of our game is the Prime Material Plane) amongst many. These material planes include worlds such as Faerun, Oerth, Krynn and many others. The material planes are rarely in direct contact with one another and when this does occur, natural disasters of cataclysmic proportions wrack both planes.

Surrounding the "stack" of material planes are the shadow and ethereal planes. All material planes are coexistant with the shadow and ethereal planes. Travel between material and shadow/etheral planes is done via powerful spells or permanent portals. Portals on Laenwold that lead to the etheral or shadow plane are rare and found in the strangest places. Despite the fact that the ethereal plane and the shadow plane are coexistant with the material planes, they do not touch one another. Direct travel between these two planes is not possible.

There are also portals that cut through the etheral plane and lead directly to other material planes. These "ethereal paths" generally allow for instant travel from one material plane to another, but sometimes the trek can be interrupted. In order to open a portal to another material plane, the caster must cast gate at a specific location on Laenwold. The ability to control the destination of the gate while traveling through the etheral plane is impossible. The magics that conjure the gate are attracted to the ethereal paths like iron to a lodestone. However, gates that target the outer planes work normally because these gates pass through the astral plane. If gate is cast at a particular location that leads to a specific target on another plane, casting gate at the same location will lead to the same target everytime. Finding the correct locations on Laenwold to get to specific locations on other material planes requires years of dangerous trial and error work. Books that accurately detail ethereal pathways are jealously guarding and extremely rare. There are no known "shadow paths." Everyone that has attempted to discover the existance of these pathways have vanished before reporting back any of their findings.

Once in the ethereal plane, travlers can enter different colored curtains that allow them to instantly walk down ethereal paths to any number of inner, energy and outer planes. The plane of shadow has no such trait to allow for instantaneous travel to other locations.

The astral plane fills the gaps between all of the other planes. It touches all planes at some point and covers many of them in its strange and wonderous power. Travel through the astral plane is always very unique and can be extremely exciting. Generally, travel from the astral plane to the other planes is done by stepping through pools of different color. Entering the astral plane, however, requires potent magic.

The six planes of raw power are positive energy, elemental fire, elemental earth, elemental water, elemental air and negative energy. These six planes exist as six individual columns that spiral up the outside of the Picture of Planes stack that holds the material planes. These six planes exist just within the area that is touched by the etheral and shadow planes. Various spots on each of the material planes is in close enough contact with the inner planes of power that one could "simply" walk from the material plane to the plane of power. Once on a plane of power, it is even possible to find a weak point in the walls between the neighboring planes of power and walk through to the other plane of existance.

<COP OUT>Until further notice, the outer planes exist as they are published in Manual of the Planes.</COP OUT>

Demiplanes exist in countless numbers and forms. They are found throughout the astral plane, in the tiny gaps between the stacked material planes and even trapped between the edges of the outer planes. Their qualities and locations are just as numerous as the grains of sand on all of the beaches of Laenwold. Ambitious planewalkers have attempted to catalogue all of these demiplanes, but all have met with failure.
