Halfling Pantheon

Except for the gnomes, the halflings were the last sentient creatures to walk the surface of Laenwold. They were once a single a race that consisted of several different families. These families eventually merged, split and formed into the races that we now know. The different families developed into the different races through a policy of extreme isolationism. The different families apparently fell into feuding and full-scale war broke out between the families. It has been recorded that half a dozen families existed before the wars, but during the course of the wars, two were destroyed.

Before the halflings destroyed themselves, the wise elder elves stepped in and pointed out to them the folly of their ways. Fortunately, the halfling leaders listened to what the elder elves had to say, but they could not settle their differences peacefully. The elder elves volunteered to intercede and prevent the four remaining families from being able to interact with any of the other halflings. After much debating (during which time the wars continued,) the halflings agreed to this magical barrier. The time between the end of the wars and the breaking of the barrier passed slowly and each family eventually formed into the four races that are walking Laenwold today.

Fortunately, the elder elf plan worked and by the time the halflings discovered a way to break the interracial barrier, they had forgotten why they were fighting. To this day, the halflings remain peaceful towards one another and towards most other races. Because their wars lasted so long, they all became well attuned to the art of war and this special skill has not left the halflings yet.
